Create a printable spool-rim filament clip with optional opposed retaining lips, inner grip ribs, three outer-spine styles and adjustable filament-end retention.
Filament Spool-Rim Clip Builder
Keep the loose end of a 1.75 mm or 2.85 mm filament strand near its spool with a single-piece printable clip. Customize the flange thickness, insertion depth, clip width and filament retention channel to suit your spool.
Fit the spool and filament
Measure your spool flange thickness with calipers and allow a small clearance for your printer and material. The two open channels serve different purposes: the larger side-opening U grips the spool rim, while the smaller top-opening groove holds the filament end. The clip is not designed to carry a spool or support a load.
Customize spool-rim grip and style
Select Smooth, Opposed Retaining Lips, Inner Grip Ribs, or Lips + Grip Ribs for the spool-facing slot. The opposed lips add a small snap-in detent, while the three shallow full-width ribs add printable grip texture to both contact faces. Grip relief is limited by fit clearance, but a physical fit test is essential for different spool materials and printers.
Keep the classic back edge or choose a Wave Back or Triple Scallop accent. The Style Relief slider adds a shallow raised contour on the outside spine without narrowing the spool-rim slot or filament-end channel. These are visual styling options, not a substitute for testing grip and fit.
Print orientation and handling
Choose Print Layout to place the broad cross-section on the build plate. Print a short test before producing multiple clips. Do not force brittle filament into the retaining groove; adjust clearance or retention lip as needed. The clip does not replace proper filament storage or moisture control.
