3D Printing Tips for Your Custom Nametag (STL/OBJ)
Design a personalized nametag above and export a ready-to-print STL or OBJ.
Use the following guidelines to get crisp lettering, durable tags, and even multicolor prints—even on single-nozzle printers.
Recommended Print Settings
- Nozzle: 0.4 mm standard
- Layer Height: 0.12–0.16 mm (balances detail with speed)
- Perimeters (Walls): 2–3 perimeters for strength
- Infill: 15–20% is plenty (Grid or Gyroid)
- Supports: Not needed — designed to print flat
- Adhesion: Skirt or brim (for smaller printers, brim adds security)
- Material: PLA (easy, bright colors), or PETG for toughness
Multicolor Printing on Single-Extruder Printers
You don’t need a dual-extruder or multi-material printer to add color. Use your slicer’s
“Pause at Layer” or Color Change feature:
- Slice your nametag normally.
- Preview the layers to find the point where the raised text or logo begins.
- Insert a pause at that layer in your slicer.
- Start the print with your base color (e.g., black).
- When the printer pauses, load your accent color (e.g., white or gold).
- Resume printing to finish the text in the new color.
This simple trick gives you crisp two-tone nametags without special hardware.
Tips for the Best Finish
- Slow down perimeters (35–45 mm/s) for sharper text edges.
- Use bright, contrasting colors (e.g., black base with white text) for readability.
- Consider ironing (if supported by your slicer) for a smoother top surface around letters.
- Clear coat or epoxy can add shine and protect your nametag for daily use.
